Want more than the gym? Group exercise could be your answer

The gym can be a testing place if motivation is low, but your peers and instructor’s enthusiasm in the exercise studio can keep you going. Trainer and presenter Rob Myers-McLaughlin reveals why you should make the move to group exercise.

You can’t beat the rush that comes from exercising with a group. More endorphins means more fun; more fun means more motivation. And more motivation means quicker, bigger results. Signing up to a timetabled workout will keep you on the honourable path.

And don’t forget the unscientific benefit of group exercise: chatting to your new buddies before the class and going for the “healthy” beverage afterwards. These things are often overlooked and can be the most important and the most likely reasons you’ll stick to your regime.

To lose weight

High-energy cardio classes that get your heart pumping are guaranteed to burn calories and help you reach your

desired weight. Try RPM® or indoor cycling – any cardio class will be good for shifting the spare tyre but, if there is an option to sit down at the same time, all the better! Martial-arts-based classes will also provide the same calorie-melting effect but with more of a routine to follow, like BODYCOMBAT®.

To get super fit

Try out classes that include resistance or interval training. BODYATTACK® is an energetic workout that takes you through two cardio peaks using the principle of interval training, combining athletic aerobic movements with strength and stabilisation exercises – it’s like putting fuel to the fire that is your metabolism.

To build lean muscle
Get yourself into the phenomenon that is BODYPUMP®. This lean muscle-building workout is the epitome of muscular endurance and is probably the most desired goal by the guys at the gym. There are also classes such as circuit training and Kettlebell training, which will help you achieve this illustrious goal.

Hopefully, the above has made you want to run to the studio and get involved – and also opened your eyes to the diversity of the studio and what it can offer you. Apply yourself to the class and the workout and I can guarantee your fitness regime will never be the same again.
